Huzzah! My Famicom Micro is here and it's utterly perfect. The screen, the overall build quality, the d-pad, the shoulder buttons, the little power lights in the start and select buttons, the Mario symbol on the back, the cute little Mario themed box it comes in...

post pixs!

I'm getting a famicom micro too ;) (and hopefully the 2nd faceplate when it's released)

thats good to hear!  I still can't see it being better than the DS mind, for the reason's i've already said, and if i know i'm gonna wanna watch a movie (on a plane or train etc), then i'll make sure i have the DS with me.  However, it seems like the micro can do it all, even if you get caught unprepared :D  Also i don't watch anything subbed so thats not going to be a problem for me :D

The DS is better to watch movies but when you are using the thing at work the micro is much more discreet.

So btw, have you upgraded to play-yan micro?  i wasn't going to, but then i showed my old one to a friend and he fell in love with it and i sold it to him for what i payed for it (6000yen) and now i can get the new one :)  Another reason for this (and getting a micro) is because you can set a mario theme to play-yan micro, and also the old one used to crash on me when using MP3's sometimes :(  The micro is going to be an even better cheap MP3 player for me now :P

I have a play yan micro but have only watched a few movies on it. I never had a problem with the old play yan and it's still going strong for me.

Style wise I prefer the black micro to the famicom one.

PS - The new famicom face plates are still not on club Mario. Though the Mario themed cap bag for the Ds is.

not sure about the play-yan micro, but the original was all in english except for the title screen and music/movie select screen, a doddle to use, so no worries there mate  Make sure you look into get one ASAP though, because i've just had a nightmare sorting and order out because they seem sold out in most places...

And also to the guy further up ^^^^, hopefully they'll be sold in the UK too, but at the moment there's no plans to :(

I've just ordered one from play-asia - said it would ship in 24hrs, so lets hope it does!

Now to go and order a 1GB SD card :-)

This is all pretty new to me - is it fairly easy to get video encoded properly for it? e.g. how difficult would it be to get some episodes of Futurama from my DVDs onto the micro?

Fairly straightforward - I decode the dvd with DVDDecrypter, then use PSP Video9 to encode them to mp4. I didn't get "MediaStage 4.2" with my Play Yan, as it was an extra 20 dollars for something that looked totally Japaneese!

Cool - sounds pretty straight forward! I'm sure I'll be asking questions though once I get it :-)

I also didn't order MediaStage for the same reason as you.

Guessing it is fairly simple then to stick mp3s and the like onto this..... do you have to follow a certain file structure or something though?

so does PSP video9 allow you to set the resolution? otherwise i assume you're cutting your dvds down to PSP size and not GBA size...surely?

EDIT: could someone change the title from "about £30 wide of the mark" to, "about £30 profit for Nintendo" :( cheers!

Yes, you can encode at 260*176 (which is one of the sizes that the play-yan supports). I tried coding at actual screen resolution of the Micro (at work at moment - can't remember off the top of my head, but its not 260*176) , and the play yan refuses to play. If you look online for Play Yan Supported Media sizes, or somesuch, you'll get a list of dimensions it'll support.

You could probably get a better solution with QuickTime Pro - but thats a tasty 20 odd squids, and I have no problems at all with coding 260*176.

Any more questions - just ask!

cool thanks for that.

You'd think what with doing a "micro" version of the play-yan they'd have some way of letting you play smaller res files for that resolution :D I'm just thinking of the space you could save if you knew you were going to be watching something on the GBmicro and not the DS for example. Ah well i suppose they had to keep it possible of playing on both pieces of hardware. I actually have Media stage 4.2 btw, but was hoping another prog could let me do things at GBmicro res so that i could save some space  seems like i can encode it, but then the GBmicro wont play it :) ah well.

Btw, how much space does a regular dvd take up at play-yan res? not tried that but really shoud...i have dvd shrink/decrypter, is it possible to convert the files in media stage oafter that, or do i need PSP Video9? thanks for the help

Not sure - I've only encoded Episodes of Frasier so far. Straight off the DVD (via decrypter), they come in at about 83 meg for 22ish minutes. Thats at a Video Bitrate of 384 , and Audio of 128.

Sorry - I got the resolution I encode at wrong - now I'm back home I can see its 240*176 , and the gba screen size (and micro screen size) is 240*160.

As far as using mediastage 4.2 - if the version you've got encodes into MP4, you'll be fine!

£40 from play-asia.  About £3 for P&P.

That's a rip off considering they cost 30 GBP. Amazon Japan have them for that price.

It seems that everyone who sees the micro falls in love with it. Is everyone going through their back catalogue of GBA games just to see what they look like?
