Sony's PSP sold roughly 185,000 units in the UK alone this week, eclipsing the Nintendo DS' 87,000. Twenty of the twenty-four lauch titles filled the Top 40 All Format Chart, with nine in the Top 10! Ridge Racer took No.1, Wipeout Pure at No.3, Virtua Tennis at No.4 and Metal Gear Ac!d at No.5. To see the chart mauling, follow the link below:

Wow

NINTENPWNED!

I love my PSP. Serves ninty right for not releasing a proper GBA followup

Jesus Christ. If PSP hadn't mauled everything in it's opening week when nothing else of interest was released, it'd be an utter disaster. As it is, it only outsold the DS by less than 2.5:1.

Edit: I thought this meant the DS sold 87,000 last week, not in the launch week. That's very different. Sony really pulled out all the stops! Nice.

according to that DS press release they put out on thursday:

In the UK, the Nintendo DS broke records for the biggest ever opening in a launch weekend, selling 87,000 units in two days – that's an average of one Nintendo DS sold every two seconds!

yep, 87,000 were the sales during the DS launch.

The DS sales for the weekend have the DS being the fastest selling console in UK history.

The DS launch seems to have gone down pretty well in the UK. Sales projections just in have the DS as selling 87,000 units in the first week making it the fastest selling console in UK history (either home or handheld).

Compare this to the UK GBA launch week which had an estimated 67,000 unit sales, while GBA SP managed 47,000. However, before today Nintendo's Gamecube was the fastest selling console over a launch week with 69,000 units mainly due to a low launch price for a home console.

The DS launched on Friday and currently has 12 titles in the UK top 40 with Mario 64 DS at number 4.

so the PSP has battered their record basically.

So... the DS sold 87k in it's first week? or the DS sold 87k in 2 days... ?

It appears that figure is for two days, though they apparently sold 600,000 of the 650,000 available for the European DS launch by the sunday, so presumably there were shortages in most of the continent for the rest of launch week, thus the UK figure may not have risen much more :S

The DS doesn't get the respect it deserves in the media. Sony will always rule with the hype machine. I bought a PSP on US launch and sold it recently. I loved it but I guess the novelty and the lack of games was the deciding factor. The PAL launch was pretty much consisting of exactly the same games so there hasn't been any progression in all these months.

I'm more for the DS now which could be seen as being a raving fanboy but it's because it's actually showcasing some real talents instead of down sized PS2 games.

You win.

October, where art thou?

But he probably doesn't win, in the long run.

It's all to easy to get caught up in the console vs console argument, no?

Both machines excellent, but born of completely different ideas.

Both machines have, or in the PSP's case will have excellent games.

Putting my hopes on Nintendogs then in October to blow out the PSP fire.

Nintendogs is ace, but it hasn't a snowball's chance in hell of outselling a certain franchise about to make it's psp debut, also in October. do the initials G T A mean anything to you ?

that's all crap of course. there is a place for both of these very different consoles.

i'm getting a bit sick of everyone feeling that they have to add their support for Nintendo whenever the psp is mentioned, like some fanboy defence mechanism. Nintendo are doing just fine.

And indeed Tanner is right.

As Sony very arrogantly put it, there isn't much of a competition here. The DS is selling very well - better than a lot of people expected, I think. I don't think there are many mainstream gamers who held off buying a DS to buy a PSP. I think the majority of them, bar the type of people who post in forum's like this, will either have one or the other.

Two different audiences.
