of the thread starting quote, the really important bit is this bit:

Twenty of the twenty-four lauch titles filled the Top 40 All Format Chart, with nine in the Top 10! Ridge Racer took No.1, Wipeout Pure at No.3, Virtua Tennis at No.4 and Metal Gear Ac!d at No.5.

since software is where all the money is to be made...

That's what Edge said as well... sad as they were that GTA hadn't been changed to fit in with the handheld gaming style, they were still impressed that they've effectively got Vice City style GTA content and GFX running on the PSP...

... now what's it going to do to that battery life? .... not that it'll make a difference to the sales mind you.

Funny thing is, will it still be an 18 certificate or will they tone down the violence?

They can use Nintendogs and Advance Wars DS and other titles to push numbers. They needed a great app to show off the DS' unique selling points, preferable BEFORE the PSP arrived. Kirby was perfect for that purpose, and NOE really dropped the ball on this. Apart from a chest-thumping pressrelease, NOE did shit all to counter the PSP launch.

I'm not going to argue with you about NOE's shitness when it comes to marketing, thats a given.

But they did release Kirby in the US to counter the PSP and it hardly caused much of a stir.

I just think that when it comes to convincing parents to buy thier kids a handheld as a Christmas it would be better for Nintendo to release as many AAA games at the end of the year to add to the perception that the DS has a better range of high quality, new games.

I believe sony's sales figures about as much as I believe their tech specs.

But these aren't Sony figures, they're Chart-track's, and "Chart-Track reports are based on over-the-counter retail sales where the data is captured electronically each day from retailers' EPoS systems. Reports are generated using an Oracle relational database, integrated with a custom-built PC-based processing system."

you know whats kind of depressing that after 8 pages of this thread not one single person has actually said well done Sony. In 4 days they have broken the previous UK first week sales record of a console by 100,000. Just think about that for a second that is more than double any other UK console launch in history!

And yet all we seem to get is people bitching about how evil Sony is, last week it was threads about how Sony will limit stock so that they will be able to "sell out" just for the headlines. This week we know that not only have they been able to almost keep up with demand (I accept in certain regions they have sold out) but that they have more than doubled all previous first week sales.

All in all I just want to congratulate them, and to everyone else who can't see what an amazing achievement this has been, all I say is grow the fuck up!

Amazing achievement? Yes, it's mighty impressive, but I wouldn't equate it to curing AIDS or world peace.

Yes, well done Sony for shifting a lot of consoles. It's kind of a given. I have to say though, there is nothing about the PSP that vaguely interests me, purely because there's nothing on the PSP that couldn't be on the PS2, which I already own. Forgive me for looking at the whole affair fairly cynically.

As for breaking records, I expect pretty much every console launch from the big three from now on will sell in higher volumes on the first week than last generation. Gaming's saturation of the mainstream kind of assures it.

But yes, if you want, well done Sony. For making lots of money.

Ofcourse not ... that's the Nintendo difference.

It's beautiful though how the fanboys jump to Nintendo's defence at every oppertunity. With 98% of the handheld market in their pocket, they're still considered the underdog.

I guess it's seeing Nintendo go from the majesty of the SNES to being squashed to fuck by Sony in the next Generation. Yeah, they made a tidy profit, and some gorgeous games, but for me I grew up with Nintendo and so they hold a special place in my heart as they're linked with soem special moments in my life. So it's just natural to want to defend them. It's almost like Sony destroyed a part of my childhood. Incredibly silly I know. Although I own every current console out there, a little part of me has a real fucking soft spot for Nintendo, simply becuase of the memories. So when Sony enter the handheld market I DO consider Nintendo the underdog becuase I know Sony are going to kill them in the media and in the long run take a larger share of the market. I just think we'll get a re-enactment of the playstation generation. I don't want to lose Nintendo. Just my opinion like.

First of all, I wasn't equating it to world peace or curing aids, just that it is the most succesfullaunch in history. I don't get the double standard on this forum sometimes, Nintendo and the DS have a launch week of 85K and people are fucking hanging out the bunting and having a celebration party. PSP doubles all previous launch figures and all we get is people bitching, I just don't get it!

As for all new console launches breaking records fair enough I agree with that, but more than doubling all previous records is an impressive feat. I don't care what your view of Sony is, on a purely business level it is quite astounding.

As for "well done Sony for making lots of money", well all I can say is welcome to the real world. Sony MS and Nintendo don't make games to be art, they don't make games because they have some deep spiritual calling to do so. They make games to make money, to answer to their shareholders and move their business onwards.

From a purely business level what Sony achieved last week in the UK was nothing short of astounding.

What a load of rubbish. You can do a hell of a lot better than that.

It's weird seeing all this hubbub over the PSP now, I bought mine last year in Japan and it's merely been an admittedly shiny device that allows me to play some fairly decent games on the move (as well as watch anime in a similar capacity as well). Then again, I've never really comprehended the excitement/loyalty over hardware.

Its only launch weekend though innit. I'm sure the hubbub was probably exactly the same on asian forums last year.

In Japan it was very different, there was as much PR if not more so but it didn't stick in the same way as it has here. Admittedly gamers queued on launch but it wasn't any near as rowdy to the sights I saw at my local GAME.

Great achievement with the PSP by Sony here. That's a staggering number of people purchasing PSP's, over £30,000,000 worth sold just in the UK.

They've also managed to hook into the impulse buy with the film UMD's. I was stuck in London last week and bought Hell Boy just because it gave me something to do on the train back, complete waste of money mind.

Yep, I think UMD sales are gonna suprise even Sony.

Yeah I get ya. i think pretty much everybody knew the UK was gonna be one of the stronger territories for PSP. It caertainly has been madness. Nintendo are seeing the effects of years of bad european operations i guess.

It's probably a little too early to say that for sure as the PSP has initially performed well in the territories it has been released in, just not with the same public hysteria.
